Post 6: Why BME (Biomedical Engineering)? Be an overachiever...
When ever I tell people what I am studying people go "Biomedical...what?" and how this relates to my dream to become a doctor. A lot of my premed friends tell me that I am crazy. Nope that's not the reason why. The reason why I am studying my major is because I am an overachiever.
First off when I came to my college I got a scholarship and that's great start, because that means I can save money for med school. Gosh, the med school I want to go to is Mount Sinai and it cost: "
Fees| Tuition annual (resident & nonresident) | $35,250 | | Application fee (nonrefundable) | $105 | | Deposit fee to hold place in class | None | | Student activities fee | $100 | | General fee | $1,500 | Medical Coverage (individual only) Family and dependent coverage is available | $2,678 |
Other Expenses (estimated)| Room and board (average per year) | $12,900 | | Books and supplies, per year | $1,245 | | Equipment (one time expense, first year) | $735 |
The Board of Trustees reserves the right to revise all fees, including tuition." according to this source: http://www.mountsinai.org/Education/School%20of%20Medicine/Degrees%20and%20Programs/MD%20Program/How%20to%20Apply/Tuition%20Information
And med school is also rising the cost as well each year. In addition, I also hope to get a scholarship. Of course, my GPA right now is 3.3 and I want it to go to 3.9 (I started out with a 3.6 and that's why I am so upset). My engineering friends tell me that my GPA is really good and I shouldn't be a worry wort, however med schools like high GPA.
I was actually lucky to get my scholarship (private donor) that I have. But still I worry about my grades. And it annoys me like crazy that my Pre-med friends tell me to switch to Bio because it's easier.
Hell fucking no!
After all my fall-back plan is if I don't get into Medical School is to do Biomedical Engineering and help create more technology for the medicine field to use. That might be why I wanted to do this major, more than Chemistry Engineering. If I went to Cooper Union, I would have done Chemical Engineering, but I don't want to become a phamacist.
I also would like to have another skill. I mean when I went to high school I thought I should become an architect, and I learned that I wasn't good at drawing, but I still understand the drawing for a floor plan. I am glad that I did medical research and learned where I want to be.
A friend told me that her fall back plan is to become a nurse, maybe I'll do that. But that's a big maybe.
I also like my major, sure I complain about how hard my classes are, but then again I am passionate in learning how to build and fix machines. Example of a biomedical engineering device would be a pace-maker. So if anyone ever needs one you know who to thank :)
I enjoy fixing and repairing things. I love learning about the body, and I love to create machines that help other people.
So essentially I tell my friends that I love what I do. I am an overachiever.
So simple advice for those who are looking for college, know what your strengths and weaknesses are. I am so glad that I learned in high school that I don't want to become an architect, because if I didn't learn that, I would have gone to school for architecture and really hate it. So do something that you are passiomate about and what you really want to do in your life.
So yeah, don't laugh when your guidance counsler says to prepare for college in 9th grade.
Be an overachiever. Work hard. Study hard. That's the secret for success. Any other secrets are none that I know of.
An IQ test of what I am capable of:
"Congratulations, xxxx! Your IQ score is
This number is based on a scientific formula that compares how many questions you answered correctly on the Classic IQ Test relative to others.
Your Intellectual Type is Inspired Inventor. This means you've got exceptional verbal and mathematical skills, and are very good at brainstorming new ideas. And that's just some of what we know about you from your test results."
This is very accurate.

"you're smartest when it comes to
You've got people smarts! Social intelligence refers to the ability to read other people and react appropriately. As a result, you probably have a pretty keen sense of others' motivations most of the time. It's likely that you can also spot the difference between what people say and what they really mean.
This understanding of behavior and human nature can help you go far. After all, it's been said that it's not what you know, but who you know that counts. And you have a way with people. Your social intelligence may manifest as having the gift for gab, being a top-notch networker, or an excellent listener and friend. However you put this intelligence to work, you're sure to be admired for an abundance of social know-how."
Go figure, I need to go study for my calculus, e's&ln's (which is easy) I just dislike a lot Volume (Shell and Disk method) =[
On the side note: Why I dislike gossip... My professor for the Holocaust Class told me this story:
"Let's say you told one of your friends something bad about me, and you felt so guilty you came back to me and told me what you said. I will tell you to take a paper out, and rip the paper to tiny pieces and then throw that paper to the air. After that collect the pieces, and tape the paper back. You see how the paper is not whole. Gossip is like killing a person's reputation, it's never whole nor can that person's reputation can be fixed. Gossip essentially kills someone, and you can never fixed that. "
So that's why I don't gossip. Plus this is what my religion believes in. I am Jewish =] So don't be a bitch and and kill someone
